Question: Why is this topic of The Sign of Jonah so important?
Answer: Yeshua fulfilling the typology of the Passover Lamb is vital to putting together the plan of salvation. Once again, the devil is in the details — or, better said, in the lack of details. If we are to teach Christ and Him crucified, we must correct all the particulars in our theology. There are way too many contradictions in the Passion Week Story. We must be able to set the record straight. The true, more in-depth answer to the above question will be revealed at the end of this study.
There are four misconceptions that we must address to be able to see the truth on this matter. They are:
1 — The Anointing at Bethany, as spelled out in Matthew 26:1–13 and John 12:1–8. Are these the same events or two different dates? What date of Abib does this event occur?
2 — How many Triumphal Entries did Yeshua complete in the Passion Week story? This is a fascinating piece of information that is tied to a brand new future command in the coming government.
3 — What date of Abib and at what time of the day does John 19:14 occur? The answer is an ah-ha moment.
4 — The true meaning of the sign of Jonah.
What we are talking about here are clues to show Christ’s typology and His connection to the lamb of Exodus 12:6. Exodus 12 ESV
The key word for today’s study is translated “keep” or “put,” as in “keep it up until the 14th day at even.” The word is mishmereth (H4931), and when applied to its root meaning (H4929), it is defined as “to charge or guard, as in a jail or prison.”
The point, hidden in the text, is the deep-rooted knowledge that the Lamb of Exodus 12 had to be set apart in custody, like prison or jail.
So, let’s share the mainstream understanding of what most Believers think concerning this account of Yeshua’s Passion Week, which is from the 6th to the 16th, a little more than a week of time.
Please note, the following is not the truth, but simply what is taught concerning Our Savior’s last week in the flesh.
On the 8th of Abib, six days before the Passover, Yeshua arrives at Bethany and is anointed that evening by Mary.
On the 9th of Abib, Yeshua triumphally enters Jerusalem for the one and only time. He then returns to Bethany free as he pleases.
People teach that on the 10th of Abib, Yeshua entered triumphally. According to these same people, He also cleansed the temple on this day.
On the 11th, Yeshua returns to Jerusalem again and returns to Bethany that evening, free as a bird.
On the 12th, Yeshua once again returns to Jerusalem, preaches in the temple, and then returns to Bethany for the evening dinner, where He is anointed again, and everybody restates what they stated four days prior, almost word for word, which makes no sense whatsoever.
On the 13th, Yeshua instructs His disciples to prepare the Passover. That evening is the Lord’s Supper, and Yeshua is taken into custody at midnight. That night, He was tried in the Edomite Jewish Kangaroo Court and found guilty of blasphemy.
On the 14th, at dawn (6 AM), Yeshua was handed over to the Roman Authorities. Before 9 AM, Pilate tried him and found him without fault (flaw). So Pilate ordered him to be beaten.
Before this 9 am marker, Pilate sent Yeshua to Herod when the crucifixion began. He was interviewed by Herod, at some length by many words. Herod found him to be faultless, had him beaten and sent Him back to Herod.
Also, before the 9 am marker, Yeshua is standing before Pilate and His accusers, the Edomite Jews, (John 19:14, at a time called the 6th hour)… And once again, for a third time, Pilate restates that he finds no fault with him. However, Pilate consents to the Jews’ wishes and orders Him crucified… The time is the third hour (8 to 9 AM).
At the 6th hour, even though this sixth hour has already passed in John 19:14, Yeshua is hanging on the cross. He gives up His Spirit (coma or passes out) at the 9th hour (3 PM) and He dies around 5 PM, when the spear enters His side and water and blood pour out.
That is pretty close to the mainstream understanding of the Passion Week.
Now, here is the truth on the matter.
The Anointing at Bethany
These are the same accounts of the same event, which occurred on the same date: the evening of the 8th of Abib.
John states this occurred six days before the Passover (the 14th). Six days prior would be the 8th. There is no argument there from anyone. The problem arises when Matthew and Mark state that their anointing account occurred two days before the Passover. The question is, what date did they mean when they said the Passover?
Was it the 14th?
Well… No, I’m afraid not. It was the 10th.
The Anointing at Bethany Timing — Descript
In 4 BCE, roughly 2.5 million people observed Passover, and over a quarter of a million lambs were killed. The Prescription was that each head of household brought a lamb to the temple to have it killed, drained, and skinned. Notice the way Luke describes this process. Luke 22:7
It was the day the Passover must be killed. It was labeled the day it MUST BE killed, not because it was lawful to begin killing them on the 10th. The Edomite Jews did nothing that was lawful, especially when there was money involved… But they had to begin on the tenth due to the number of people needing the service of killing the Passover to be completed.
Six days before the 14th = The 8th
Two days before the 10th = The 8th.
Conclusion: The Anointing at Bethany in John, Matthew, and Mark’s accounts are all the same event—the 8th of Abib.
Working from this date, we can now determine how many triumphal entries there were.

On the 6th of Abib, the Disciples went to Jerusalem and brought back two beasts of burden: a donkey and her Colt. That day, Yeshua rode the Colt into Jerusalem, making the first triumphal entry. He entered the temple, looked around, wept for Jerusalem, and returned to Bethany.
On the 7th of Abib, Yeshua rides the second Beast of Burden, the Donkey, into Jerusalem for a Second Triumphal Entry. Yeshua curses the fig tree. Then cleanses the temple, overturning the money changer’s tables. That evening, Yeshua returns to Bethany.
Ezekiel 45:20 Ezekiel 45 ESV
On the 8th of Abib (The Weekly Sabbath) — Yeshua walks into Jerusalem. WHY? Because it is the Sabbath, and causing a beast of burden to work would be breaking the Sabbath. Yeshua preaches the richest and deepest texts of all the gospels, Matthew 22, 23, 24, and 25, leading up to the opening of Matthew 26 and the Anointing at Bethany. Thus, Yeshua returns to Bethany that evening for the Anointing account.
On the 9th of Abib, Yeshua locates a third Beast of Burden and rides triumphally into Jerusalem for a third time. He meets and preaches to the Greeks who come to see him. Yeshua quotes Isaiah 52–53, predicting the fulfillment of that Passage from Isaiah.
The 10th of Abib — This day is addressed by the three authors that speak concerning this day as follows:
Matthew calls this day — The first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread
Mark calls this day — The first day of Unleavened Bread when they killed the Passover.
Luke calls this day — The day of Unleavened Bread when the Passover must be killed.
That evening, the 10th, Yeshua instituted the changed ordinance of the Renewed Covenant Passover, consisting of Foot Washing, Bread and Wine, and a song of Psalms. Then they went to the garden around 10 pm or so. Around midnight, Yeshua was taken into custody by the Jewish hired Roman soldiers. He was then tried in a kangaroo court and found guilty.
On the 11th of Abib, Yeshua is handed over to the Roman Authorities (Pilate). Yeshua is tried in Pilate’s court and found without flaw (the first of three days found without flaw). Pilate beats Him and orders Him to be sent to Herod.
The 12th of Abib, Yeshua is taken to Herod, who tries him using many words for a long time. Herod finds no flaw or fault with Yeshua. Herod beats him and sends him back to Pilate.
The 13th of Abib (The Preparation of the Passover John 19:14) — Yeshua is once again tried by Pilate and found to be without flaw, for a third time. Pilate consents to the Jews’ will and orders Yeshua’s crucifixion.
The 14th of Abib (Passover Day) — At 8–9 AM, the third hour, Yeshua is led toward His crucifixion. Yeshua was hanging on the stake by noon (the end of the 6th hour). By 3 pm (the end of the 9th hour), Yeshua gives up His Spirit. By 5 PM, Yeshua dies at the point of the Roman long spear.
So, what time is John 19:14? Answer: noon on the 13th of Abib, a full 12 hours before the mainstream teaching says Yeshua was taken into custody.
So, what is the meaning of the sign of Jonah? Answer — The three days and nights of Matthew 12:40 are the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Abib. Yeshua, the Passover Lamb of YoHeWaH, was in custody and imprisoned by Rome for these three days and nights.
Matthew 12:39–40 Is Not Referring to the Time Yeshua Was in the Grave
The traditional Sign of Jonah theology has at least five major problems.
Problem 1: The mainstream teaching often claims Passover fell on a Wednesday that year. They say that Yeshua was tried and crucified all day, and then right before sunset, He was placed in the tomb, beginning the three days and three nights. They believe that on Saturday, just before sunset (at the end of the Sabbath), He rose from the dead, waited overnight for Mary to arrive at the tomb, and so on.
Let’s examine Matthew 12:39–40 Matthew 12 ESV
Notice the sequence of Yeshua’s words:
Day/Night, Day/Night, Day/Night
The sequence commonly taught is:
Night/Day, Night/Day, Night/Day… Yeshua rises 12 hours before Mary finds Him risen.
Problem 2 — The mainstream teaching says that Yeshua was crucified on the 14th and placed in the tomb right before sunset on the 14th. He stayed in the tomb for the next 72 hours and was raised at the end of the 17th, a weekly Sabbath on Saturn’s Day. These same people believe Yeshua fulfilled the lamb of Exodus 12 by riding into Jerusalem on the 10th of Abib on a beast of burden. Does anyone see the problem with this? See Deuteronomy 5:14.
Problem 3 — Jonah was alive for 72 hours and in the great fish’s belly. The Mainstream states, Yeshua was dead these 72 hours.
Problem 4—The heart of the earth can not be the tomb. The tomb was above ground, not in the heart of the earth, in a hewn-out boulder.
Problem 5 — And this is crucial. Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection fit in perfectly with the 14th, 15th, and 16th commands of Leviticus 23.
The 14th is the Lamb’s death
The 15th is the Sabbath rest in the tomb.
The 16th is the wave sheaf offering of the first of the firstfruits.
The traditional teaching within the churches says that the rest in the tomb took three nights and days and that the day of firstfruits (the wave sheaf day) is the 18th of Abib, or the day after a Saturn’s day Sabbath.
Poppycock!!!
The sign of Jonah refers to the time that Yeshua is being tried and tested to determine whether or not He is, as Exodus 12:5 states, “without blame or flaw.” This test proves Yeshua is worthy of being your Savior.
This is why this topic is so very important.
